The Hastilude is a group of sporting events popular in Ackenzal, with the athletes hailing from the noble classes, but viewed with great ardor among the commonfolk. The most popular events are jousting, fencing, and grappling.
Occasionally, the Tuning arts are introduced into the Hastilude, with the most popular event of those being the Blazebird. The blazebird is a net game played with a light, fire-resistant ball and two teams of three. The goal is to keep the ball suspended using only blasts of Tuning fire, and points are gained by having the ball land on the opposing team’s side. One is also allowed to sends blasts underneath the net at opponent’s feet. This leads to teams often seperating into blockers, who dispel the fire coming from the other team, blasters who attempt to trip up players, and keepers who attempt to get the ball over the net.
Another special event, the Master’s Play, is fought by students attempting to gain rank within the Faculty of Masters. It is a bout fought by one student against a series of continually refreshing opponents, and the student is required to prove proficiency with a different weapon against each new foe. For a student trying to attain the first rank within the Faculty, he must face four opponents, one with a broadsword, another with a sabre, another with a rapier, and the last by grappling. The challenge gets more elaborate and difficult for each successive rank within the faculty.
