Starfall steel is a refined metal that either comes from, or has been affected by, the magical radiation of one of the two asteroids that were called down by the astromancers. The metal is unique in that it interacts with The Loom as if it were alive, even though it contains no soul of its own. Starfall steel can thus be enchanted or be used as a Phylactery. The metal is very valuable and is almost exclusively found in the hands of the wealthy. The venerable of Thassal have been attempting to establish trade relations with the giants of the Glassed Lands in order to attain enough starfall steel to create more durable phylacteries, but usually are forced to resort to violent means of prying the metal from the more savage giants.
In Ackenzal, starfall steel weapons are given as rewards for bravery on the battlefield. Some warriors even undergo a version of the rite of sennit to have their souls braided to their chosen weapon. Sometimes older creations using the metal are referred to as being made with starfall iron, rather than steel, because crucible and blistering processes were not commonly used. Starfall iron is visually much different than starfall steel, being a nearly lusterless shade of grey. It is often much more brittle, though can be hardened with elizadry.
