The byk (pronounced “beh-yik”) are massive, elk-like creatures roam the plains and mountains of Esgalgrath. They stand at around twenty hands at the top of their shoulder, and often weigh a full tonne. Their hide is is covered with brown fur that’s maned at the hoof and underbelly, and is said to be so thick that it can repel musket fire. They, like other fellwrought creatures, are prone to develop lithoderms that harden their skin and may limit mobility. The males sport antlers that can measure fourteen feet wide from tip to tip, and, uniquely, both genders have a secondary set of antlers that protrude down and forward that give the beasts a more practical (and deadly) capacity to charge predators. They subsist on forbs, aquatic plants, and lichen. They are fierce creatures, as prone to attack as any predator of Esgalgrath, and hunting them is a dangerous activity even for the native giants. They provide game meat for the giants, and some tribes among them regard the hunting of a byk as an initiation rite.
