An Ascendant, also referred to as a Saint or a Deva, is a individual who, upon death, had their soul rise up to the heavens and remain tied together, rather than unravel, fray, and rejoin the Loom. Ascendants are the central figures of most human religions, and some draw upon their power by aligning their soul to an Ascendent, allowing them to access the Loom without the extensive study of Gnostic Magic or the necessity for innate talent like Anagogic Magic. This craft is known as Weft, and requires a practitioner to live the virtues of whatever Ascendant they have aligned themselves with.
Ascendants are almost always individuals who accomplished great, world-shaking deeds in their lifetime. Examples include Saint Gaius, who slew a Walking God, Mammohan Bhadra, the inventor of the printing press, Fada Amic, a famed diplomat and martyred peacekeeper, and most importantly The Philosopher-King, the greatest emperor of humankind. Faekind has never produced any Ascendants, leading some scholars to believe that they are inadequately formed in some manner.
The largest organization dedicated to the Ascendants is the Ascendant Church, based out of the island Khanjivoram. This particular church has clerics representing all known Ascendants, with the exception of Anathem, or those who ascended through supposedly unscrupulous means. The Ascendant Church believes that Ascendants come close,or closer than most, to exemplifying the Oversoul, an immense consciousness that penetrates through all things connected to the Loom and exists beyond the dualities and pluralities of the material realm.
